Summer School detailed program

DAY 1
Arrival at the Vesuvian Institute. Welcome cocktail and dinner on the panoramic terrace.

DAY 2
Breakfast; program, project and activities of the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation details explanation; lecture about “The Stabiae site”. Guided tour of the Roman villas of Stabiae: Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna. Return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon free time. Dinner on the panoramic terrace.

Course of Roman Archaeology (or Italian Language course): lesson 1
Departure for the beach with packed lunch. Return to the hotel.
Lecture workshop: "Music in Ancient Rome by the Synaulia group".
Dinner on the panoramic terrace

DAY 4
Breakfast and departure for a guided visit to the archaeological site of Pompeii. Free time.
Return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, workshop about “More Maiorum – Fashion in ancient Rome”. Dinner on the panoramic terrace.

DAY 5

Course of Roman Archaeology (or Italian Language course): lesson 2
Departure for the beach with packed lunch. Return to the hotel.

DAY 6
Breakfast and departure for Naples for a guided tour in the historical city centre streets. Lunch in a typical Neapolitan pizzeria. In the afternoon, visit to the Archaeological National Museum of Naples.
Return to the hotel and dinner on the panoramic terrace.

DAY 7

Course of Roman Archaeology (or Italian Language course): lesson 3 and Delivery certificates of the first module
Lunch in hotel and free time.
Farewell dinner and entertainment with live music.

DAY 8
Breakfast and departure with packed lunch.

Packed lunch. Return to hotel and dinner.

Lunch in hotel and guided tour of the archaeological site of Herculaneum.
Return to hotel and dinner.

Day 12
Buffet breakfast and transfer to the port. Departure by hydrofoil to the island of Capri for a day trip, with visit of Augustus Gardens, Villa Jovis, Marina Grande, Marina Piccola, the famous Piazzetta and shopping streets. Packed Lunch. Return and transfer to the hotel for dinner.

Course of Roman Archaeology (or Italian Language course): lesson 4
Departure for beach with packed lunch.
Dinner in a typical pizzeria of Gragnano.

DAY 14
Breakfast
Course of Roman Archaeology (or Italian Language course): lesson 7 with a simulated excavation, Delivery certificates of the second module.
Lunch in hotel and free time.
Farewell dinner and entertainment with live music.

Breakfast and departure with packed lunch.

Setting Description: The host country for this program is Castellamare di Stabia, a town on the marvelous seaside of the Bay of Naples, at the crossroads of Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento and Amalfi Coast, with a rich cultural heritage and a beautiful natural environment. Educational tours takes students to Pompeii, Ancient Stabiae, Naples and Rome. The recreational program includes sunbaths, evening entertainment and fine food.

Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation (RAS)

The Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation (RAS) is a non-profit foundation with the mission of set up Ancient Stabiae, with its luxurious Roman seaside villas, as an archaeological park.

The RAS Foundation is born in Washington, DC in the 2002 as a partnership between the University of Maryland, the Campania Region and the Superintendence for Archaeology of Naples and Pompeii.

The RAS Foundation has organized two exhibitions of artifacts and frescoes from the villas of Stabiae, titled “In Stabiano” and “Otium Ludens”. Their first stage is at the Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg, Russia. Through these exhibitions, the RAS Foundation would promote the richness of the Vesuvian area to foreign universities in the efforts to sustain the archaeological park project and encourage academic and high level tourism on and near the site.

How to reach us

Hotel of Culture and Study

According to a research NIAF (National Italian American Foundation) in the 2007, among the 150 existing American University programs in Italy, no one is in Campania, or in the South of Rome. Thus, in May 2007, the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation opened the doors to the Vesuvian International Institute for Archaeology and the Humanities with the mission of providing services for research and study in the Bay of Naples. The Institute, unique in Southern Italy, hosts mainly school groups, foreign and Italian Universities, cultural travellers and researchers of the Bay of Naples, but also individual tourists who wish to rediscover local culture in a unique context which offers both opportunities for day excursions and relaxation.

Facilities

94 single, double, triple and quadruple rooms (up to 200 people); 1 bar; 2 restaurants (up to 250 seats); auditorium (up to 180 seats); classrooms; exercise room; 1 theatre (up to 380 seats); outdoor garden space; sporting grounds; library; wireless internet; elevator, and wheelchair accesses. Cultural Tourism: the pleasure of culture…

The Vesuvian Institute offers to its guests a completely different tourist concept. The cultural tours are led by local experts and aimed at rediscovering the daily joy of being in the Bay of Naples made of archaeological and artistic treasures, of folklore attraction. These amenities are with interactive workshop to catch guests’ curiosity. Local culture is the main focus of the specialized archaeologists and researchers, who drive the visitors on an unforgettable experience. The Institute is close to all major tourist attraction in the Campania region: Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, Positano, and Amalfi so that it is possible combine free time with cultural immersion.

Archaeology courses and guided tours

RAS Foundation courses and workshops provide archaeological, historical and artistic knowledge of the Vesuvian area. Courses include theoretical and practical lessons, and above all excursions to historical and archaeological sites of interest, guided by experts.

Archaeology for schools

Ras foundation offers tours for elementary, middle and high schools. They consist of Campus day with workshops, entertainment and guided tours, school trips tailored to the needs and length of stay of each group. The guided tours focus on the history of some of the most famous archaeological sites of the world (Pompeii, Stabiae, Herculaneum), mixing education and recreation in order to enhance the students’ appreciation of local culture.

Universities and study abroad

From the 2007, the Vesuvian Institute has hosted more than 50 American, Russian, and European University groups that choose to base their program of study and/or research in the area of history and archaeology of the Vesuvian region, or of Italian culture. One of the long term goals of the Vesuvian Institute is that of becoming a Study Abroad centre which offers semester programs, credited by Italian universities and staffed with a logistical and administrative services. The Institute has signed an agreement with the Centro Interuniversitario H2CU (http://www.h2cu.com/) in order to offer Dual Degree courses that grant credits both recognized by Italian and foreign institutions.

With its ample space, classrooms, auditorium, restaurants, and gardens, the Vesuvian Institute is the ideal location for every kind of events: exhibits, expositions, meetings, conferences, conventions. All events are personally orchestrated according to individual requests. With its panoramic view of the Bay and the Vesuvius, the favourable climate, warm atmosphere and welcoming staff, your events become moments of pleasure and shared company in the midst of culture and tradition.

Presidential room is equipped with microphones, podium with microphone, projector screen, blackboard, audio-visual conference for distance learning, special lighting, internet / wireless on request, optional technical additions such as graphic design and publicity support also available.

The Taste Club provides a full immersion into the food and wine culture of the Campania territory. The Taste Club is not only a cultural and scientific association of researchers and food enthusiasts but also place to taste, learn, and experience firsthand the cuisine that makes this area so renowned for its gastronomy.
